NOVO BANCO considered relevant to understand the impact of its corporate carbon footprint since it was founded in August 2014, in the continuity of its proactive approach and environmental concern prior to its rebranding from the former BES. ECOPROGRESSO supported the Bank on the following services:
- The corporate carbon footprint is the Inventory of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions associated with the activities of the bank, covering the branch network, the head office building (Avenida da Liberdade), the Castilho building, and the remaining buildings that are managed or owned by NOVO BANCO. It followed the direct emissions from scope 1, 2, and 3 according to the calculation methodology follows the Greenhouse Gas Protocol of the World Resources Institute (WRI) and World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD);
- Analysis of the temporal evolution of GHG emissions in order to identify reduction trends, which should be encouraged, increased and controlled;
- Review and monitoring of the operational and organizational boundaries to be considered;
- Evaluation of the impact of implementing measures to reduce energy, paper and water consumption, in terms of GHG emissions;
Monitoring of the verification process by an external audit entity.
The universe NOVO BANCO considered in the calculation of GHG emissions in the year 2018 included the following company data: 4 382 employees, 381 branches, and 20 Business Centres.
